If a lot of student scans are failing on a bus with an RFID reader, begin by gathering as much information as you can about the specific symptoms:
- The reader is expected to beep and flash a red light when a student scans. Does it do so?
- What message does the copilot screen show to indicate that the scan failed?
Next, obtain a test fob or other bus pass like those your students use. Use it to check your work as you try the following:
- Unplug all cables between the RFID reader and the copilot. Turn the copilot off, then after ten seconds turn it back on and plug the cables back in.
- Replace the cables between the RFID reader and the copilot with known good cables. If you don't have spares, you can swap cables with a bus where scanning works, and see if the problem stays on the bus or migrates with the cables.
- Disconnect the cable from the RFID reader and plug it into a known good spare reader. If you don't have a spare reader, you can swap readers with a bus where scanning works, and see if the problem stays on the bus or migrates with the cables.
If you determine that you need new cables or an RFID reader, open a support ticket with Transportant by sending an email to
support@transportant.com, mentioning the bus number and what you need.
